The origins of K.i. can be traced back to January 2014 in Melbourne, Australia. Karyn Augustinus and Lawrence Cummins founded the company Black Cactus Pty Ltd. Data science led us into the world of blockchain and early Forex and cryptocurrency trading platforms in 2015.  

 

 A significant shift in the company's direction came during the global pandemic. During the pandemic, the changing landscape of technology and business led us to explore applications of artificial intelligence, and decentralized systems.

 

During this transformative period, the company decided to rebrand itself and its products with the K.i. nomenclature. I have been asked about the origin and meaning of the name, and it is important for us to share the story behind it.

 

The name K.i. has a significant meaning, representing the core principles and values that the company stands for—the "K" in K.i. Is derived from the data science reflection of k-meaning a type of clustering, Clustering is a fundamental technique where data points are grouped together based on similar characteristics. This reflects our first principle of leveraging data science to provide valuable insights and solutions. 

 

The "i" in K.i. represents imaginary numbers in mathematics. Imaginary numbers, although not tangible, have real-world applications in fields such as mechanical and electrical engineering, physics, and signal processing. We apply Imaginary numbers to our solutions, so the “i” reminds us to innovate and explore unconventional ideas to drive progress. 

 

The new name came out of a meeting with Nick Wiszowaty, a global leader in branding and communications to come up with a new brand and company vision, K.i. The transition to K.i. signifies a shift towards embracing cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, reflecting the company's evolution and commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry. It is a testament to K.i.'s adaptability and willingness to embrace change in response to the ever-evolving technological landscape.

 

By combining the concepts of clustering and imaginary numbers, K.i. represents a fusion of data-driven insights and forward-thinking innovation. The name encapsulates the company's vision of harnessing the power of data and technology to drive meaningful and impactful change.
